Did you know there is a snack quietly referred to among senbei fans as the “alternative” to Happy Turn (ハッピーターン)?
Its name is Ajishirabe (味しらべ).
If you love Happy Turn’s “Magic Powder,” you absolutely must try Ajishirabe! Coated with rich umami powder, it’s not just an alternative—it’s a top-tier rival in terms of deliciousness 😋
Today, I’m reviewing Ajishirabe, a snack that’s a “hidden gem” even in Japan!

Package & Individual Wraps
The package features a traditional Japanese pattern, exuding a calm and authentic Japanese atmosphere 🇯🇵

It also highlights the brand’s commitment to quality with a clear “100% Japanese Rice Used” label.
The Secret of the Wave Pattern
Have you noticed the wave patterns on the top and bottom of the package?
This is a traditional Japanese motif called Seigaiha (青海波). It is an auspicious pattern representing wishes for “eternal happiness” and a “peaceful life.”
Each individual wrapper contains two crackers.

The “100% Japanese Rice Used” label is printed here as well, clearly conveying the manufacturer’s strong pride and commitment to using only the best ingredients as their top selling point.
Note: The Rice Used in Most Senbei
Most senbei sold in supermarkets are not made from 100% domestic rice. They are typically a blend of domestic and imported rice, or simply made from imported rice.

You can check the ingredients, allergen information, and other details on the back of the package.

Flavor & Texture
Just like Happy Turn, these crackers are coated in a rich umami powder that creates a perfect sweet and salty balance! ✨

According to the official description, the secret to this powder is “fine granulated sugar and flavorful powdered soy sauce.”
I find the sweetness to be slightly more prominent than the saltiness, with the rich aroma and umami of the soy sauce enhancing the overall deliciousness. It has a deep, mild flavor that is absolutely addictive 😋
As you can see from the cross-section, the texture is fine-grained and incredibly light. It has a delightful crunch and literally melts in your mouth!

The two crackers in each individual wrapper disappear in the blink of an eye 😆
Size
For those curious about the size, here it is compared to a ruler. Each cracker is about 7 cm.

Just like Happy Turn, Ajishirabe has a slender, oval shape that fits perfectly in your mouth, making it very easy to eat 👍
Extra: How to Enjoy the “Umami Powder” with the Smart “Slide Style”
I previously suggested the “Banana Style” as a smart way to eat Happy Turn.
Since Ajishirabe is also covered in plenty of umami powder, let me propose another sophisticated way to enjoy these savory snacks without getting the powder on your fingers.
Introducing: the “Slide Style“!
First, open the top of the individual wrapper. Then, from the outside of the bag, gently slide just one cracker upward as if pushing it out. Finally, just bite into the part that emerges from the bag!

If you eat them this way, even if someone suddenly asks to shake your hand while you’re enjoying Ajishirabe, you can quickly respond with a clean, powder-free hand! 😄
